Fertilization of tomatoes with hormones (tomatine)

Although recent years fertilization of tomatoes by bumble bees has become more actual, however, smaller farmers are fertilizing using hormones (the product is known as tomatine) The phases of fertilization in tomato is a very sensitive stage and is heavily dependent on external conditions, temperature and relative humidity. The quality of the fruit of the tomato depends on successful pollination and fertilization.
Tomatine contains two plant hormones such as:

  • Gibberellic acid;
  • Auxin.
  •
    Advantages and disadvantages of fertilization with hormones:
    Unlike natural fertilization using bumble bees, the fertilization with hormones shouldn’t be careful to pesticides (mainly insecticides) with treated plants. However, fertilization using hormones has more disadvantages than advantages. Like most important parameter that should be taken is the time of application of hormones for fertilization. Other problem is that if the wrong dosage is applied at inappropriate external conditions may the fruit to has deformities.
    Namely, farmers often don’t make a difference in the time of application. Most of them apply hormone for fertility in the afternoon.

    At what time of day is best to fertilize tomatoes using hormones?
    For fertilization of tomatoes, besides temperature, another important factor is the relative humidity. When we have the optimum relative humidity in the protected area (about 60%), pollination and fertilization are the best. In our situation, it is in the morning. After the disappearance of the dew of the plant application of fertility hormones can begin, because then the pollen grains and pistil are most active.
    Deformation of the fruit with unskilled use of fertilization hormones
    During fertilization with hormones, when in protected area lower temperatures, deformation occurs on the fruit. Deformation of the fruit is manifested by lateral cracking and intense cell division expands and starts at a certain time the seeds shows up. That fruit has no commercial value.
    Bending the top meristem at a higher dose of hormone fertilization
    If use higher dose of hormone after some time occurs bending of the top meristem and symptoms are similar to those of viral disease. Bending of the top meristem occurs because of the hormone which is applied and moves through conduit vessels, the hormone doesn’t evaporate and concentrate at top part of the plant which grows intense, and in this case it is the top meristem and fruit.
